FAQs

What is Academy Safe?

Academy Safe is a trusted martial arts registry that helps academies gain accreditation, demonstrating their commitment to safety and professionalism. We provide a platform for students and parents to find accredited schools, ensuring that all staff undergo thorough background checks. Our mission is to promote safe, high-quality training environments for everyone in the martial arts community.

Why does Academy Safe make it necessary for academies to have security cameras?

To be accredited by Academy Safe, it is necessary for gyms and academies to have security cameras installed to ensure a safe, transparent, and supportive training environment for students, instructors, and visitors. Security cameras help protect against incidents of misconduct, theft, or injury by providing a clear record of events. This level of accountability fosters trust among students, parents, and staff, showing that the academy prioritizes their safety and well-being. For us at Academy Safe, a secure environment is foundational to quality training, and security cameras play a crucial role in achieving this standard.

Why is it necessary for academies to have AEDs/defibrillators on-site?
At Academy Safe, we believe that it is essential for academies to have AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators) on-site because they provide a critical, life-saving response in the event of a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). High-intensity activities, like those practiced in martial arts, can increase the risk of SCA, especially among young athletes who may have undiagnosed heart conditions.

According to the American Heart Association, 9 in 10 cardiac arrest victims who receive an AED shock within the first minute survive, and using an AED along with CPR can double or even triple survival rates. Having an AED on-site ensures that, in a cardiac emergency, immediate care is available—giving students, instructors, and visitors the best chance of survival.

To support our mission of safer martial arts environments, Academy Safe has partnered with Avive, a leader in next-generation AED technology. Through this partnership, we aim to make AEDs more accessible to academies nationwide, equipping them with the tools needed to respond effectively in critical moments.

How can I support Academy Safe’s mission?

You can support our mission by donating on GoFundMe or PayPal to help us build and maintain our Safety Registry Website, promoting safe practices throughout the USA and Canada, and providing educational resources to academies. Every contribution helps ensure a secure and enriching experience for martial artists across the nation. You can also follow us on all social media platforms!

Why are background checks important for martial arts academies?
Background checks help ensure that all staff and coaches are qualified and trustworthy, creating a safer environment for students. This measure promotes accountability and protects the well-being of all participants.
How can academies become accredited through Academy Safe?
Visit our website AcademySafe.org, click on Register My Academy, and follow the steps to meet each of the safety standards. Academies must meet our stringent safety criteria and submit the necessary documentation for verification. Once approved, they will be listed in our national registry, showcasing their commitment to safety and quality instruction.
Who is eligible to sign up an academy?
Any staff member of an academy can start the process to become academy-safe!
Why should my academy become accredited through Academy Safe?
Accreditation through Academy Safe highlights your academy’s commitment to safety and professionalism, making it more attractive to students and their families. Accredited academies are listed on our national martial arts registry, building trust and credibility, and helping protect against liability risks.
What offenses would disqualify someone from passing the background check?

An individual will not meet Academy Safe’s background check criteria if their record includes any of the following offenses, unless the case was adjudicated as not guilty:

  1. Any felony conviction
  2. Sexual offenses, including but not limited to rape, child molestation, sexual battery, possession or distribution of child pornography, prostitution, and indecent exposure
  3. Drug-related offenses
  4. Crimes involving harm to a minor, such as child abuse, neglect, endangerment, or DUI with a minor present
  5. Violent crimes, including those involving deadly weapons, domestic violence, or serious assaults (even if reduced to disorderly conduct)
  6. Stalking, harassment, blackmail, violation of a protection order, or making threats
  7. Property crimes, including arson, vandalism, and significant destruction of property
  8. Animal abuse, cruelty, or neglect

Any flagged record will be reviewed according to Academy Safe’s policies to determine final eligibility.
